Sere Mailwa Water Pan Project – Kajiado County
Project Overview
The Sere Mailwa Water Pan Project, implemented by Rumhas Construction Co. Ltd in Kajiado East Constituency, Kajiado County, is a vital initiative aimed at improving water accessibility for both the local community and livestock. The project involved excavating and shaping a reservoir within shallow rock strata, achieving an average depth of 1.7–2.5 meters. It features a 5-meter buffer zone to control soil settlement, a sturdy embankment to prevent overflow, a 143-meter spillway for safe water discharge, and an inlet channel system with a silt trap to enhance water quality and longevity.
Sere-Mailwa has long faced water shortages due to erratic rainfall and inadequate natural storage, often leading to human-wildlife conflicts, particularly with elephants. This project provides a reliable, sustainable, and wildlife-conscious solution by ensuring safe access and minimizing environmental degradation.
Since completion, the pan has reduced water stress, improved livestock productivity, and strengthened community resilience against drought. It also promotes environmental conservation by balancing water access between people and wildlife. The Sere Mailwa Water Pan stands as a model of sustainable water management in arid regions, demonstrating Rumhas Construction Co. Ltd’s commitment to innovative, eco-friendly, and community-centered infrastructure development.
